It is a well-known fact that mother’s milk is the best food for infants and babies. Often referred to as liquid gold as it is extremely nutritious, wholesome and is nature’s biggest boon to the helpless newborn babies. However, breastfeeding is not as easy as it may seem to some people, especially for first-time mothers. In fact, it is quite common for women to face various problems during breastfeeding. The most common of these problems is the inability of mothers to provide this nectar of life to their children in ample quantities, as they are not able to produce enough milk.

Fenugreek: Fenugreek is considered extremely effective to help stimulate the milk-producing glands. It is a rich source of phytoestrogens that help in stimulating sweat glands and since milk-producing glands are also modified sweat glands, it works effectively on them. The best way for lactating others to consume fenugreek for increased milk production for baby breastfeeding is by drinking the tea brewed with fenugreek seeds every morning. A tablespoonful of these seeds should be soaked overnight in one cup of water and then the entire contents should be boiled in the morning to make the tea. However, fenugreek consumption should be avoided by women suffering from diabetes and asthma.


Cumin Seeds: Cumin seeds not only help in improving breast milk production but also improve digestion besides providing relief from constipation, acidity and bloating and also prove effective in reducing iron deficiency in new mothers. Cumin seeds can be consumed by mixing one teaspoon of powdered seeds with one teaspoon of sugar and taking the mixture with a glass of warm milk before going to sleep each night. The procedure should be followed for a few weeks to gain relief from the most common of breastfeeding problems, namely, lack insufficient production of breast milk. Alternately, lactating mothers can brew a tea by boiling two teaspoonfuls of cumin seeds powder with half a cup of water and then adding a half cup of milk and one teaspoonful of honey to the beverage after straining it. The resulting solution should be mixed well before consuming it once every day for several weeks.

Garlic: Stimulating lactation is one of the few benefits offered by garlic, which is rightly known as a superfood. As a really good galactagogue, garlic not only helps in enhancing the flavour of the breast milk but also enables lactating mothers to feed for a longer time. Nursing mothers should finely grate three cloves of garlic and boil it with a cup of water until the liquid is reduced to about one-quarter of the cup. Then they should add a cup of milk to the water and boil the solution once again. Add a teaspoon of honey after removing the beverage from heat and straining it. Drinking this solution daily in the morning can prove extremely beneficial and offer great breastfeeding benefits to new mothers as well as their babies.


Cinnamon: Cinnamon is one of the highly recommended breastfeeding diets as it is known to not only enhance breast milk secretion but also improve the flavour of the milk for the babies. It also helps in delaying menstruation after childbirth besides preventing the early conception of the next child. Although cinnamon can be taken with almost every food or beverage consumed by lactating mothers, the best and the most effective method of consuming it is with milk and honey. Mix just about a pinch of cinnamon powder with a teaspoon of honey and take this mixture with a glass of warm milk. The remedy should be followed every day by the nursing mothers before going to bed for a minimum period of 2-3 months to ensure that they produce enough milk to feed their babies. Consuming cinnamon with other everyday food items can also enhance the overall breast milk production capacity of lactating mothers by a significant margin.
